Airbrushing

Models in magazines look better on the cover than they do in real life. This page gives an example of how much better they look.

This blonde heard that milk baths would make you beautiful. She left a note for her milkman to leave 15 gallons of milk. When the milkman read the note he felt there must be a mistake. He thought she probably meant 1.5 gallons, so he knocked on the door to clarify the point. The blonde came to the door and the milkman said, "I found your note to leave 15 gallons on milk. Did you mean 15 gallons or 1.5 gallons?" The blonde said, "I want 15 gallons. I'm going to fill my bathtub up with milk and take a milk bath." The milkman said, "Pasteurized?" The blonde said, "No, just up to my neck."

Happy Festivus!

The Roman comic poet Plautus used the word Festivus to name the wild celebrations attended by common folk back in the third century B.C. But it was the "Seinfeld" episode that made it a popular event today. The Festivus website has lots of info on the current goings on. While we don't have an aluminum pole set up, we'll try to take part in the latest traditions. Lynne will air some grievances, and then the boys and I will wrestle until they pin me down.

As an aside, a couple of years ago we made up some plaques for Lynne to sell at a local winter craft sale. We included a Happy Festivus plaque with a tiny aluminum pole. It didn't sell.

Mondegreens

A mondegreen is a series of words that you mistakenly hear as another series ofwords (Isle of Ewe instead of I Love You). Snopes has an article on Christmas carol mondegreens that they have had submitted. Some of my favorites:
  • Joy to the world! The Lord has gum!
  • Round John Virgin, margarine child; Holy imbecile, tender and mild.
  • Chipmunks roasting on an open fire.
  • Good King Wences' car backed out On the feet of heathens.

Bubblewrap

Bored? Go and pop some bubblewrap!

After eleven months I finally received an offer to head the audit team at the local Air Force base here. We're very excited about how God has orchestrated it. I just want to thank all those who helped to pray this into happening. We appreciate your perseverence.

Scotchshield

3M has developed a film called Scotchshield that you apply to glass. It keeps the glass together after an impact which reduces the chance of injury, but it also adds strength to the glass. This display was set up at a bus stop in Vancouver. A security guard was posted nearby and they had rules that you couldn't use anything but your own body to try to break the glass. No one was successful.

A man goes to his doctor for a complete checkup. He hasn't been feeling well and wants to find out if he's ill. After the checkup, the doctor comes out with the results of the examination. "I'm afraid I have some bad news. You're dying and you don't have much time," the doctor says. "Oh, no, that's terrible. How long have I got?" the man asks. "Ten," says the doctor. "Ten? Ten, what? Months? Weeks?" he asks desperately. The doctor says, "Nine."

Hillbilly Housewife

Could you feed a family of four on $45 a week? Hillbilly Housewife has complete instructions on how to do it. She gives you a shopping list, daily menus, even a daily list of what to cook (some steps involve cooking enough for several days). The protein comes mainly from beans instead of meat, but the meals are varied and she provides all recipes.

Study - Longer needles needed for fatter buttocks.

Fatter rear ends are causing many drug injections to miss their mark, requiring longer needles to reach buttock muscle, researchers said on Monday.

Standard-sized needles failed to reach the buttock muscle in 23 out of 25 women whose rears were examined after what was supposed to be an intramuscular injection of a drug.

Two-thirds of the 50 patients in the study did not receive the full dosage of the drug, which instead lodged in the fat tissue of their buttocks, researchers from The Adelaide and Meath Hospital in Dublin said in a presentation to the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America.

Digital Holy Bible

If you believe the KJV Bible is the only true version, then you will be happy to hear about the David Steele USB Digital Holy Bible. The complete KJV Bible is contained in a fixed memory test file format that you can easily access through your computer or laptop's USB port. There are no other versions. Available, that is.

Guess the Google is an interesting game. It googles a word at random and shows you twenty pictures. You have to guess what the word was. Sometimes the pictures are helpful, sometimes not. Try to get your name in the top ten!

What made me laugh today...

I found myself fascinated by this site. A person is falling through the air, hitting randomly-placed spheres and bouncing off and between them. It's kind of like Yvonne's cursor, only with a human factor. It evokes a combination of empathy at the falling person, and humor at the site's creator.

If the person stops falling, you can use your cursor to spin her around and even fling her sideways to get her going again.

Eye Telescope

Remember the six million dollar man? Well, VisionCare has developed a implantable miniature telescope for your eye that can magnify objects up to 3x.

Okay, it's actually only for patients with age-related macular degeneration and it can't zoom or anything. You get it placed in one eye to obtain central vision while the other eye provides you with peripheral vision.

Protect Your Delicate Fruit

This is the BananaBunker. It is used to protect bananas from bruising when placed in your backpack, nap sack, soft carrying case, or briefcase. It costs only $5 USD, and I don't imagine I'll get one. First, I'm allergic to bananas and second, I don't want to open my briefcase at work, have someone see it and try to guess what it is.

As far as I'm concerned, it just lacks appeal.

Popping Balloons

Tim O'Reilly hosts Foo Camp each year ("Foo" stands for "Friends Of O'Reilly"). It's just a bunch of gaming enthusiasts who get together. This year they used a high-speed camera to photograph each other popping balloons. The gallery is filled with some cool pictures of balloons in the middle of bursting.

Black Toilet Paper

From Renova you can purchase black toilet paper. Apparently it is all the rage in Spain and France. Regulations and consumer concern about dyes are limiting the North American market to the colorless variety, but colored TP continues to be popular in Europe.

"Then I'll take you to my place, overcome you with passion and make love to you," he said. "Oh, no you're not," she said firmly.
"And I'm not going to wear a condom either!" said the guy. "Oh, yes you are!" said the girl.
